Gabriel’s Windmills

“There are things in this world we don’t understand yet. One of them had happened to me, and I didn’t need to know how, or why. It was just good.”

So says Kathy, the eleven-year-old hero of Romi La Paz’s novel, Gabriel’s Windmills, published by Cabo Molino Press. Kathy’s father has died, and she and her mother are facing hard, uncertain times. Kathy is not about to question a bit of good luck, and who can blame her?

Her luck arrives in the unexpected form of Gabriel, Kathy’s new friend from school. He discovers he can use the local wind farm to tap into an unseen world, a storm of sights, sounds, feelings and ideas he couldn’t possibly be expected to know. This is a phenomenon called a “Bridge”, and soon Kathy is crossing it, too.

At first, their new world promises to change things for the better, but as Kathy and Gabriel continue to visit the windmills, darker truths are revealed to them. In the end, Kathy must decide between the world of the windmills and the real world where she lives, but for her that’s not an easy choice to make.

Romi la Paz tells a story of our time, of the battles we sometimes have to fight, and the hidden strengths that help us win them.
